New Japanese rocket engine explodes during testing for 2nd time in 16 months

A test of an engine for Japan’s upcoming Epsilon rocket ended in an explosion on Tuesday (Nov. 26), the second time in less than two years that this engine has met an untimely end during testing.

On Tuesday, a second-stage engine designed for the Japan Aerospace Exploration Agency’s (JAXA) new Epsilon S rocket exploded some 49 seconds into testing at the Tanegashima Space Center in southern Japan.
