How to watch CBC’s coverage of Monday’s byelections in Montreal and Winnipeg

Voters head to the polls in federal byelections in Montreal and Winnipeg on Monday. The former will serve as a test of the Trudeau government’s popularity, while the latter is shaping into a tight race between the Conservatives and New Democrats.

CBC’s online special “Canada Votes: Byelection night” will stream live starting at 9 p.m. ET on Monday.

Power & Politics host David Cochrane will guide viewers through live results from the byelections in LaSalle—Émard—Verdun and Elmwood—Transcona. Cochrane and a panel of insiders will also break down what the results mean for the looming federal election.

The special will stream live on CBCNews.ca, the CBC News App, CBC Gem, CBC News Explore and the CBC News YouTube page.

CBCNews.ca will have the latest updates, up-to-the-minute results and full political reaction to the results. The polls in both ridings close at 9:30 p.m. ET.

LaSalle—Émard—Verdun, a Montreal riding most recently held by former Liberal cabinet minister David Lametti, is seen as a crucial test for the Liberals, especially following the party’s surprising loss in a former stronghold in Toronto in June.

The Liberals have won the riding in the last three elections, but the party’s hold on this part of Montreal has lasted for much of the last century.

The byelection in Winnipeg’s Elmwood—Transcona riding was triggered when former NDP MP Daniel Blaikie resigned to work for Manitoba Premier Wab Kinew.

The NDP has won 10 of the 11 elections held in Elmwood-Transcona and its predecessor riding since 1988. The Conservatives won the seat in 2011. The Conservatives hope the NDP’s association with the unpopular Liberal government will help turn the seat blue.
