US Coast Guard rescues Haitian migrants stranded by smugglers

On 7 September, the US Coast Guard rescued 11 Haitian migrants from Monito Island in Puerto Rico, where they had been stranded by smugglers.

The island, west of the main island of Puerto Rico, is uninhabited.

The group were spotted by a fishing vessel who notified the Coast Guard earlier that day.

According to the Coast Guard, “migrants who are interdicted at sea or apprehended ashore will not be allowed to stay in the United States or a US territory”.
