Caf Awards 2024: Barbra Banda and Chawinga sisters on women’s player of the year shortlist
Zambia striker Barbra Banda and Malawi’s Chawinga sisters Tabitha and Temwa have been named on the five-strong shortlist to become African Women’s Footballer of the Year.
Nigeria goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie and Morocco forward Sanaa Mssoudy round out the contenders.
The winner will be announced at the Confederation of African Football (Caf) Awards in Marrakesh, Morocco, on Monday, 16 December.
Temwa Chawinga and Banda were the top two scorers in America’s National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) this season, with the Malawi forward netting 21 goals to Banda’s 17.
However, the Zambian bagged the winner in the championship final to fire Orlando Pride to the NWSL title, and was voted the BBC’s Women’s Footballer of the Year last week.
Lyon’s Tabitha Chawinga led the scoring charts in the French top flight last season, while Paris FC’s Nnadozie was named as the division’s best keeper.
AS FAR’s Mssoudy won the award for the best player at the Caf Women’s Champions League, although she had to settle for a runners-up medal as AS FAR were beaten by TP Mazembe in the final.
