Hurricane Helene Benefit Comp Has R.E.M., MJ Lenderman, War on Drugs
Unreleased recordings by R.E.M., MJ Lenderman, the War on Drugs, Feist, Waxahatchee, and more than 100 other artists make up a newly released benefit compilation, Cardinals at the Window. Proceeds from the megacomp, available on Bandcamp, will help provide aid to victims of Hurricane Helene in Western North Carolina.
Other artist who contributed tracks to Cardinals at the Window include Nathaniel Rateliff & the Night Sweats, Angel Olsen, King Gizzard and the Lizard Wizard, Sharon Van Etten, Jeff Tweedy and Karly Hartzman, Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings, Sylvan Esso, Fleet Foxes, Little Brother, Archers of Loaf, Iron & Wine, the Avett Brothers, and Jason Isbell. The unreleased recordings include demos and live versions of songs, as well as never-before-released songs.
R.E.M.’s contribution to the compilation is a live rendition of “King of Birds” recorded in Greensboro, North Carolina in 1988. Iron and Wine submitted a cover of the Bee Gees’ “How Can You Mend a Broken Heart.” And Waxahatchee and Sluice each contributed covers of songs by Gillian Welch specifically for the comp.
Three organizations will receive money from sales of the compilation: Rural Organizing and Resilience, which offers people education, outreach, empowerment, and mutual aid; BeLoved Asheville, which provides food, housing, medical, and mental health care to people in need; and the Community Foundation of Western North Carolina, which distributes capital to those in need. There’s also a Cardinals at the Window website, part of Music’s Promise organization, that allows people to donate separate from purchasing the compilation.
“There were just so many folks who, like us, had witnessed the destruction of these holy places from the outside and felt their hearts trying to break out of their chests,” musician and community organizer Libby Rodenbough, who helped organizer the compilation, said in a statement. Rodenbough was on tour with the Dead Tongues when the storm hit her home. “It was instant, the way people signed on. They also feel what I feel, that these mountains are the cradle of some deep and ineffable magic.”
Hurricane Helene made landfall in the “big bend” region of Florida on Sept. 27 and made its way north, dumping water along Western North Carolina. About half of the 200-plus people who died as a result of the storm were in the state, and hundreds were still unaccounted for as of last Friday, according to NBC News. Communities in the area have been working together to help one another in the region. “Asheville talks a lot about community,” Sarah Brown, a West Asheville resident, told Rolling Stone last week. “We’re meeting neighbors we’ve never met. We’re meeting folks that never would have stopped by and said hello otherwise. It’s pretty breathtaking.”
