Production-distribution powerhouse Constantin Film has unveiled the cast for its crime-drama series “Smilla’s Sense of Snow,” and the first-look images from the show.
The series stars Filippa Coster-Waldau, Elyas M’Barek and Henry Lloyd-Hughes. Other cast members include Morten Suurballe, Amanda Collin, Set Sjöstrand and Alexandre Willaume.

The series is directed by BAFTA winner Amma Asante, and created and written by Clive Bradley, adapted from Peter Hoeg’s bestselling novel. The book was previously adapted in 1997 as a feature film, directed by Bille August and starring Julia Ormond.
The series is set in 2040 in Copenhagen. Smilla Jaspersen lives in a surveillance state under threat from an impending energy crisis. She is alone and leads a withdrawn life until she meets a young Inuit boy who finds a way to her heart. When the boy suddenly dies in mysterious circumstances, Smilla wants to know why.

Her search for answers leads her to the icy scenery of Greenland and right to the center of dangerous political power games. Smilla’s extraordinary abilities are the key to the truth – about the boy and her own identity.
Coster-Waldau, who plays Smilla, is a young and upcoming Danish actor. In 2022, she starred as one of two leading roles in DR’s youth series “Salsa,” which was praised by critics for being bold and truthful. That year, Coster-Waldau also starred as the lead, Louise, in Viaplay’s original series “Where Were You.”
Coster-Waldau is the Danish voice of Wednesday in “The Addams Family.”

M’Barek, one of Germany’s most popular movie actors, appears in his first international production in a leading role.
He achieved phenomenal success with his starring roles in “Turkish for Beginners” (2012) and the “Fuck You Goehte” trilogy (2013, 2015, 2017), which were seen by more than 25 million moviegoers. He also starred in critically acclaimed roles such as the political thriller “The Collini Case” (2019) and “Nightlife” (2020), and the box-office hit “Das Perfekte Geheimnis” (2019).
In 2023, he was nominated for a Bambi in the best actor category for his role in Michael Bully Herbig’s political satire “A Thousand Lines.”
M’Barek is the German voice of “Paddington” in the films of the same name. The last part, “Paddington in Peru,” was released in cinemas last month.
British actor Lloyd-Hughes will next star in “Thursday Murder Club,” directed by Chris Columbus for Netflix, and was last seen in Hulu miniseries “We Were the Lucky Ones,” adapted from the New York Times bestseller.
His television credits include BBC’s “Marriage,” Amazon Prime’s “Mammals,” AMC’s “Ragdoll,” ITV’s “Archie,” BBC/Amazon’s “The Pale Horse,” Netflix’s “The English Game,” BBC’s “Killing Eve,” and Channel 4/PBS’s “Indian Summers.” His film credits include “The Inbetweeners,” Searchlight’s “Chevalier” and Lionsgate’s “Now You See Me 2.”
“Smilla’s Sense of Snow” is a Constantin Film production in co-production with Viaplay, ARD Degeto Film and Baltic Film Services, and in cooperation with Netflix in German-language territories, and in association with and distributed by ITV Studios.
Asante is also an executive producer alongside Oliver Berben, Robert Kulzer, Pipaluk K. Jørgensen and Tina Hastings. The show is produced by Alicia Remirez.
