Leading Malaysian director Adrian Teh has begun filming thriller “Magik Rompak,” a high-stakes heist thriller.
The narrative follows a leading magician who assembles a reluctant crew for an audacious and daring heist to steal a priceless gem. As their pasts intertwine and the stakes rise, the team must perfect the art of illusion, confront their own vulnerabilities, and orchestrate the ultimate vanishing act to protect their futures.
“Magik Rompak” is structured as a co-production and hails from ACT 2 Pictures (Malaysia) and Clover Films (Singapore). May Woo of ACT 2, Paulyn Chua and Lim Teck of Clover Films will serve as executive producers.
Clover will be handling international sales. GSC will be handling theatrical distribution in Malaysia. Clover and GV will handle theatrical distribution in Singapore.
Budgeted at $3 million (RM13 million), the movie got underway on Nov. 9. It will be entirely shot in Malaysia over a 50-day production period, with parts filmed at the Iskandar Malaysia Studios in Johor. Singapore visual effects house, WOWFX Studios, will craft a significant portion of the film’s sophisticated digital effects.
Leading the ensemble cast are: Sharnaaz Ahmad (“Polis Evo 3”), Zul Ariffin (“Sheriff”), Miller Khan (“The Bridge”), and Fabian Loo (series “Fly By Night”). The female leads include with Amelia Henderson (“Pulau”), Yasmin Hani (“Gold”), and Elvina Mohamad (“Zombitopia”) adding layers of complexity and intrigue to the story. Adding gravitas to the production is multi-talented veteran Singaporean actor Tay Ping Hui (“Legend Of The Condor Heroes”).
Ahmad starred in “Polis Evo 3,” which was the top grossing local movie in 2023 with RM54 million ($12.3 million) box office, while Ariffin was in “Sheriff,” which collected RM62 million ($14.1 million) this year at the box office.
“The fusion of magic and heist elements offers audience an entirely fresh cinematic experience,” said Teh, CEO of ACT 2 Pictures and the film’s director. “Alongside the plot twists and captivating magic sequences, I’m experimenting with innovative filming equipment, aiming to create visual experiences that will wow viewers.”
“’Magik Rompak’ marks the 13th movie that I have worked with Adrian. He has grown to be one of Malaysia’s top directors, with a clear vision on making high quality commercially driven movies that connect with audiences. I hope it will be the 13th time lucky for our great collaboration,” said Clover Films principal Lim Teck.
