The competitors faced extreme conditions, with temperatures starting at -17°C and plummeting to -25°C, accompanied by strong katabatic (downhill) winds.
For safety reasons, the race was held on a 4.2km loop around the Ultima base camp, allowing runners to take breaks in a refectory tent for food and water.
Americans Paul Johnston and Roberto Sembiante set a new world record in the 100-mile (182 km) race, finishing in 23 hours and 22 minutes.
In the 100km race, China’s Yusheng NI completed the course in 10 hours and 40 minutes.
