A top Russian general in charge of radiation, chemical and biological protection forces has been killed in an explosion in Moscow, according to the country’s investigative committee.
Lieutenant General Igor Kirillov was found dead alongside his assistant outside an apartment building on Ryazansky Prospekt in Moscow.
The explosion was caused by a device hidden inside a scooter, said the committee.
A day prior to his death, the Kyiv Post reported that the general was sentenced in absentia over using banned chemical weapons in Ukraine.
In October, Kirillov sanctioned by the UK government over the use of transfer and use of chemical weapons in Ukraine.
Investigators said a criminal investigation has been opened in connection with the deaths.
