Tyler, The Creator Announces New Album, ‘Chromakopia’
The Grammy-winning musician’s seventh album is set to drop next week
Tyler, the Creator just announced the title and release date of his new album, Chromakopia, set to drop on October 28th, and now available for pre-order. The announcement comes days after Tyler infamously lamented about fans badgering him for new music online. Last week, he commented on a post from Steve Lacy on Instagram, where he expressed frustration with fans asking for new music. “I feel you shit is annoying especially when I never said out my mouth an album was coming,” Tyler wrote. “I wanna be an actress lmao.”
It turns out Tyler had plans up his sleeve all along.
Yesterday, he kicked off this latest album rollout that fans have been clamoring for by sharing a snippet of a new song and music video on YouTube. In the clip, we hear Tyler in a new vocal register. His signature production style — the glistening synth chord progressions that doused early OF releases in a cartoon-like technicolor — arrived subdued beneath a moodier sonic register. A sign of a distinct musical reinvention, which is par for the course for Tyler, whose career thus far has followed his various alter egos rise and fall as he entered different phases of life. Now, it seems, Tyler’s entering new terrain. More than a decade into his career, he’s an elder statesman of today’s youth culture, and this latest sonic turn might speak to some of the frustrations he’s expressed with the current state of music.
On top of a new album, Tyler’s Camp Flog Gnaw Festival will celebrate its 10th anniversary next month, giving Tyler, the Creator fans plenty to be happy about over the next few weeks.
